Formats
Common conversions and why
- PNG to JPG: for photos saved as PNG, such as some screenshots of photos. JPG is usually many times smaller for photographic images.
- JPG or PNG to WebP: for websites. WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality and can have transparency like PNG.
- WebP to JPG or PNG: for apps and older software that can't open WebP files yet.
- HEIC to JPG: for sharing iPhone photos with Windows and Android users (in Safari).
What stays and what goes
The picture itself is kept at the size you choose. Metadata, such as the camera model, date and GPS location, is not copied into the new file. Animated GIFs become still images, showing the first frame.

Which formats can I convert?
You can convert to JPG, PNG and WebP. As input, TinyPixr accepts anything your browser can open: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and, in Safari, HEIC photos from iPhones.
How do I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
Open TinyPixr in Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad, which can read HEIC, add the photos and save them as JPG. Other browsers can't open HEIC files yet. Alternatively, set your iPhone camera to "Most Compatible" to shoot JPG in the first place.
What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?
JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas become white. Convert to WebP or PNG if you need to keep a transparent background.
Can every browser save WebP?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera can. Older versions of Safari can show WebP but not save it from a web page; if that happens, TinyPixr saves a PNG instead and tells you.
Will converting reduce quality?
Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG or WebP uses the quality you set; at 85% or more the difference is practically invisible. Converting an already compressed JPG again loses a little more each time, so convert from the original where you can.
