Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more detail. PNG is lossless, so converting to PNG first lets you edit, annotate and save as often as you like without further loss.

Good to know
- PNG files are usually much larger than the JPG they came from.
- Converting doesn’t bring back detail that JPG compression has already removed: the PNG looks exactly like the JPG.
- A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG won’t have a transparent background either.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of what the JPG shows, including any compression artifacts. It only prevents further loss when you edit and save the image again.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG throws away detail you can barely see to save space. For photos, that difference adds up to files that are often several times larger.
Can I make the background transparent?
Not by converting alone. A JPG has no transparency, so there is nothing to keep. Cut out the subject with an image editor or a background remover first, then save it as PNG or WebP.
Are my images uploaded?
